The Upper School Media Center supports, enriches, and extends the educational program of the Upper School. A place for individual study and research as well as for classes working on special projects, the media center has resources for students in their academic pursuits and recreational reading.

The Mount Vernon collection includes more than 18,000 print and non-print materials. A full-time librarian is available for help with information-seeking skills, reading guidance, and ready reference assistance to individual students or entire classes.

Additionally, the library offers a carefully selected collection of electronic databases for academic research. These databases have been created by information professionals so that the content is more reliable and authoritative than a general web search.

E-BOOKS

This year, Mount Vernon is excited to announce the addition of e-books as a reading option for Upper School students. Mount Vernon will utilize Overdrive Software, whose Overdrive School Download Library® provides eBooks, audiobooks, and more for computers, cellphones, iPod, and hundreds of devices – all downloaded from the school’s unique Overdrive website. This engaging technology can motivate students at all learning levels to read. As a result, it can enrich vocabulary, comprehension and pronunciation, as well as introduce books above reading level, teach critical listening, and help busy students find time to read.

More information will be available as the software is put into place early this fall.

ONLINE MEDIA CENTER CATALOGUE - Alexandria

Alexandria is Mount Vernon’s online card catalog. Students, parents, and teachers can access the site at home or at school to search for books in our library. When looking at the location of a book, if it says Upper School, the location is the Glenn Campus Media Center. If it says Media Center, it is located in the Lower School Media Center.

CIRCULATION POLICY

All library materials can be checked out for two weeks at a time. Students in grades seven through twelve can check out up to three books at a time. Parents and teachers may check out as many books at a time as they need. Students will be given overdue notices when books are late. There are no late fines for books that are returned late. If the student has lost the book, a fine will be due and parents will be notified through the Financial Office.
