The Upper School has 38 faculty members and includes a former CEO, a professional opera singer, a charter school founder, Georgia Tech’s band director, and graduates of (among many others) Harvard, MIT, Carnegie Mellon, University of Georgia, Georgia Institute of Technology, University of Southern California, Bates College, and the New England Conservatory of Music.

In information technology, Bobby Paul Antony (M.B.A – Anna University-India, B.S. Physics – M.G University-India) has 10 years of professional experience, including 5 years teaching computer programming. Bobby has extensive experience with net-centric computing, covering a range of sub-specialties including computer communication network concepts and protocols, multimedia systems, internet standards and technologies, network security, wireless and mobile computing, and distributed systems. As Multicultural Coordinator, Curtis Berry (B.A. Educational Studies – University of Missouri-Columbia, M.A. & E.D. Education leadership – Jones International University) provides the operational leadership to ensure the success of the various diversity initiatives – internal and external – of the Mount Vernon Upper School. Curtis is a former professional basketball player and has served in various capacities for Mount Vernon over the past 8 years. For the last 3 years, he has taught middle school French and coached the Varsity Boys Basketball Team, leading the team to win 2 state titles in their last 3 seasons. Third grade teacher and Upper School International Coordinator, Meg Brown (B.S. Elementary Ed. – College of Charleston, M.Ed. Leadership and Administration – Kennesaw State University) has six years of professional experience, including the opportunity to teach abroad in Saitama City, Japan, with The J.E.T. Programme, and is proudly entering her fourth year teaching at Mount Vernon. Meg loves exploring new concepts with her students and has a passion for Global Education. She is currently serving as the liaison responsible for connecting the Lower School to our sister school in Zambia. Meg has traveled to five continents and visited 15 different countries. DR. KELLI BYNUM
As Director of Counseling Services, Dr. Kelli Bynum (BA- Randolph Macon Womans College, MA- The George Washington University, Ph.D.- The University of Southern California) has worked in a variety of settings. She began her career at Childrens Hospital in Washington, D.C., and then transitioned into University Counseling Center staff psychologist positions. Dr. Bynum then spent a number of years with a large psychiatric practice as both a practitioner and an administrator. For the last 10 years she has maintained a small private practice in the Atlanta area. During this time Dr. Bynum spent five years as the school outreach director for the Eating Disorders Information Network. She has given numerous talks on topics such as nutrition, body image, relationships, anxiety and puberty to both students and parents. In eighteen years of practice she has enjoyed being in an educational setting more than any other work experience and is excited to be back in that setting and part of the Mount Vernon community. In her free time Dr. Bynum enjoys time outside with her three children and travelling to her native state of Virginia. In physical education, Reggie Burnette (B.S. Industrial Distribution – University of Houston) joined Mount Vernon Presbyterian School in February 2006. Reggie was drafted into the National Football League in 1991 while attending the University of Houston. While at the University of Houston, Reggie was named to the All-Southwest Conference team three times as a linebacker and in 1990 was named Conference Defensive Player of the Year. He also received All-American honors and accolades. Reggie spent one season with the Green Bay Packers and two seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In 1992, he led the Buccaneers in special team tackles. Prior to coming to MVPS, he was an integral part of the Sandy Springs Youth Sports Association. He served as a coach, athletic director and president of SSYS Football organization over a 5 year span. Reggie has also served as youth director at his church. In Physical Education, Sharon Burnette (B.S. Industrial Supervision – University of Houston) joined Mount Vernon in October 2006. Sharon was signed by the University of Houston in 1986 on a basketball scholarship while attending Lyndon Baines Johnson in Austin, Texas. At the University of Houston, she was named six-man of the year, started for the Cougars for 2 years, and was honored with being a captain for 2 years. As a player and a graduate assistant she continued to work with the basketball team and basketball camps for girls in the Houston area. Prior to coming to MVPS, she was an integral part of the Sandy Springs Youth Sports Association. She served as a coach, Vice President of SSYS Football organization, and secretary of the board for the North Metro Football League (NMFL) for 5 years. Sharon has also served as a co-director in the youth department at her church. Sharon teaches physical education, physical conditioning, and weight training at Mount Vernon Presbyterian School. In social studies, James Campbell (B.A. History – College of Charleston, M.A. Teaching – Morgan State University) teaches World History, Government, and Economics. He began his career connecting disabled adults with job opportunities. In 2003, he transitioned to teaching by becoming a founding faculty member of a high school in Delaware. Since that time, James has taught hundreds of high school students, led staff development workshops on literacy, developed curricular materials at the district level, and held various coaching assignments. In language arts, Melody Cannon (B.A. English/Theatre -East Carolina University, M.S.T. English – University of New Hampshire) has over thirty years of classroom experience. She is a graduate and contributor to the New Hampshire Writing Program and has been an Advanced Placement English exam reader for many years. Her most recent experience has been establishing cross-curricular design and working with the Writing Initiative. In journalism and library science, Molly Christian (B.S. Elementary Education-Brenau University, M.Ed Elementary Education-Brenau University) is beginning her 15th year as an educator at Mount Vernon Presbyterian School with 9 years of experience teaching 3rd grade and 5 years of experience as the Middle and Upper School Media Specialist. Ms. Christian also is the yearbook adviser, the Interim Term coordinator, as well as the communications coordinator for Mount Vernon. Herself an alumnus of Mount Vernon, she attended Mount Vernon from the age of 3 through the 6th grade. Her love of the School and its teachers is what inspired her to become a teacher as well as to return to Mount Vernon after college to begin her own career. As Director of Academic Resource Services, Samantha Flowers (B.S. Special Education -Auburn University, M.Ed. Interrelated Special Education -Kennesaw State University) has eleven years of teaching experience. Her professional experience includes time as a classroom teacher in grades kindergarten through eighth and three years coordinating the Academic Resource program at Mount Vernon Presbyterian School. In her role at Mount Vernon, she collaborates with parents, teachers and students to develop instructional strategies and coordinate necessary support. She has had the opportunity to participate in on-going professional development in an effort to improve student achievement. These experiences include the Orton Gillingham approach to Reading Instruction, Lindamood-Bell-Visualizing and Verbalizing Language Comprehension and Thinking, and various forms of Assistive Technology. Most recently, Samantha had the opportunity to attend the Learning & the Brain Summer Institute at the University of California- Santa Barbara focusing on Neuroscience & the Classroom. Cindy Glueckert (B.S. University of Illinois) began teaching in the Chicago area in 1972. During her 9 years at Old Orchard Jr. High School she taught Physical Education, started the Interscholastic athletic program, coached, and officiated swimming and basketball. Cindy is now celebrating her 22nd year at Mount Vernon Presbyterian School. She taught Physical Education and Health many years before becoming an Administrative Assistant at both the Middle and Upper Schools. Cindy coached basketball and volleyball at the MS level and started the Varsity Volleyball program, coaching for 4 years when the Glenn Campus came into existence. Cindy continues to work as an Administrative Assistant at the Upper School, teaches Upper School Health, and acts as the Upper School Mentor for the Outreach Prefect. In mathematics, Danielle Heintz (B.S. Management – Georgia Institute of Technology, M.A. Teaching Secondary Mathematics – Kennesaw State University), teaches Advanced Algebra & Trigonometry, Calculus, AP Calculus AB, and AP Calculus BC. She has four years of teaching experience at Mount Vernon, where she also taught Algebra II, Geometry, College Algebra, and SAT Math Prep. Technology is incorporated into her lessons in the form of graphing calculators and computer applications. Danielle says she uses a variety of approaches – e.g., numerical, graphical, algebraic, inter-disciplinary – in explaining concepts to students to aid in a more thorough understanding and appreciation for the subject. As Athletic Director, Mark Heiser (B.A. University of South Carolina-Coastal Carolina) works to ensure the operational and managerial success of Mount Vernon’s burgeoning Athletic Department. Mark was the Athletic Director at Shorecrest Prep in St. Augustine, Fla., before coming to Mount Vernon. Mark spent nine years as the Athletic Director at Bishop Ireton High School in Alexandria, Va., before his one year in Florida. In the social sciences, Dr. Gregory Hite (B.A. Religion – Bates College, M.A. and Ph.D. American Religious History – University of Virginia) has sixteen years of professional experience, having taught mostly at the collegiate level at school such as the University of Virginia, College of William & Mary, James Madison University, and most recently New College of Florida. He has worked extensively with teachers on incorporating technology into the classroom and developing student writing. Chip Houston (B.A. Social Science Education – University of Georgia) leads the admissions team in attracting prospective families to Mount Vernon and growing the School. He has taught US history, world history, economics, political science, and geography for nearly a decade. Most recently, he was the Department Chair for the Talented & Gifted program at Chattahoochee High School, as well as an AP World History teacher. In world languages, Mitzi Kintz (B.A. English literature – University of Alabama, M.F.A Fiction Writing – Georgia State University) has discovered she loves teaching Latin I through IV every bit as much as English, her previous subject at Mount Vernon, where she has taught for 11 years. Translating every Latin sentence is like solving a puzzle, which makes it always a fun challenge, states Mitzi. Add to that the cultural dimension of Rome’s art and architecture, its varied political history, the superior advancements of the Romans – like roads, sanitation, aquaducts and peace – and Greek and Roman mythology, and one has a rich subject matter in which to delve. As Director of Development, Lauren Koontz (B.A. – University of Georgia, M.B.A. – Georgia State University) oversees all fundraising efforts for the School. Lauren also teaches the subject of Philanthropy during Religion Seminar at the Upper School. Her career in the non-profit sector spans 15 years and includes development experience as a state and national program manager for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, as a major gifts director at Emory University’s School of Medicine, and as a consultant at Atlanta’s oldest and largest non-profit consulting firm, Coxe Curry & Associates. In visual arts, Hank Kunath (B.A. Drawing, Painting, and Art History – University of Tennessee, M.A. Studio Arts – Murray State University), is the Arts Chairperson and founder of the MV Upper School’s Visual Arts Program. Earlier in his career, his understanding of color, composition, and approach to the fragmentation and pattern of shape in nature placed him significantly on the road to a conceptual interpretation of the visual. DEREK McCLOUD
Derek McCloud (B.S. K-12 Spanish Language Education – Kennesaw State University) is the middle school Spanish teacher as well as Upper and Middle School chapel coordinator at MVPS. Derek currently holds two Georgia teaching certificates, and has been teaching middle grades Spanish at MVPS since 2009. Derek is also an ordained minister. He helped found a college ministry in 2005 that is still running to this day.
Christopher Moore (B.A. – Jacksonville State University, M.M. – East Carolina University) currently serves as Director of Instrumental Music on the Glenn Campus, as well as Director of Athletic Bands and Coordinator of Percussion Studies at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia. He previously served as Assistant Director and Staff Arranger of the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Band and Director of Instrumental Music at Marist School in Atlanta, Georgia. Mr. Moore is an active freelance performer, clinician, arranger, composer, and film scorer. His compositions and arrangements have been performed nationally and internationally. He has served as percussion and arranging consultant to Wynton Marsalis on three large works for the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic. In Middle School mathematics, Julia-Leigh Pelt (B.B.A. International Business – University of Georgia, M.A.T. Education – University of Georgia) teaches Pre-Algebra and Algebra. She also teaches Upper School Religion Seminar. She began her career in mezzanine finance and transitioned into education via a Master’s degree in 2005 and certification in Middle School Mathematics in 2006. MARSHA POWELL
College Guidance Counselor and 11th & 12th Grade Academic Advisor, Marsha Powell (B.S. Music Education – Auburn University, M. Ed. Supervision and Administration – University of West Georgia, M. Ed. Middle Grades Education – Mercer University) has thirty-five years of professional experience and investment in education, thirty-three of those have been at Mount Vernon in various positions. She taught elementary and middle grades music; second and fourth grade classrooms; and middle grades history, literature, language, and algebra. She also served as Principal of the Middle School. Presently, she works in college counseling and academic advising for juniors and seniors. Additionally, as an administrative team member, she acts as advisor for the National Honor Society, teaches Religion Seminar, and orchestrates commencement exercises. She loves the Mount Vernon students, her colleagues and the school. Marsha and her husband Tommy are very active in their church, Peachtree Road United Methodist where they serve as the Sunday 11:15 Usher Team leaders. She is the Liturgical Committee Chair, is a member of the Altar Guild, and received Stephen Ministry training. Tommy volunteers as one of the coaches for the Mount Vernon golf team. Dr. Tom Rounds (B.A. Bowdoin College – Chemistry, Ph.D., M.I.T. – Physical Chemistry, M.B.A. Finance – Northeastern) returned to his true love, teaching science, nine years ago. Prior to that he served as an IT project manager at Macy’s and enjoyed fourteen years of post-secondary teaching at universities like UC Berkeley, University of Denver, Harvard Medical School, and Tufts. He has co-authored 12 papers in refereed journals and written several book chapters on molecular structure and dynamics. Frank Shelton (B.S. His classes have spanned various cities in Tennessee and Georgia and included K-12 students as well as college undergraduates. She has extended her graduate education at the universities of Alicante and Sevilla in Spain and lived in Italy, where she taught Spanish and English as a Second Language. Gretchen is passionate about foreign language education and currently teaches Spanish III, IV, Conversational Spanish III and AP Spanish Language. In information technology and business, Garry Sullivan (B.B.A. Computer Info Systems & Business Management) is beginning his 6th year as an educator and technology instructor at Mount Vernon with the first three years being involved in grades K – 6th and the last two years seeing involvement with all 12 grade levels. He introduced a number of innovative IT classes in the Upper School. Garry is also extensively involved Mount Vernon Athletics haivng coached the Middle School girl’s soccer team to two consecutive NAML Championships and the boys team to a Championship game appearance. Garry originally came over to the United States from South Africa in 1999 on a tennis scholarship at Columbus State University after being a top 10 junior tennis player in South Africa and earning National High School tennis honors. Despite excelling in tennis, his first love is rugby. In 2007, he was chosen for the USA 7′s squad. Math Education – University of Georgia, Master’s Math Education – Georgia State University) is entering his 7th year at Mount Vernon and 18th year overall in teaching high school math. His teaching experience includes stops at St. Pius X, Wesleyan, and Pinecrest Academy. Mike serves as Math Department Chairperson and also Head Varsity Baseball Coach.
