The Mount Vernon Mindsets and College Counseling

Solution Seeker: Goal setting and measuring progress towards those goals is an integral part of the college process. Additionally, forming meaningful questions that help students reflect on who they are and who they want to be are at the heart of our college matching process. The road to a particular school is not always direct, students must find ways to present themselves in the strongest light possible to increase their likelihood of being accepted to a particular school.

Communicator: Beginning junior year, students will practice and sharpen their writing and interviewing skills.  Students are encouraged to meet with or contact college representatives as they learn to be advocates for themselves, establish relationships, and glean information about the colleges of interest.

Creative Thinker: Our hope is that we help students consider schools, programs, regions, and careers beyond their initial assumptions. Suspending judgement to consider the college choice without preconceived constraints is important in enabling students to find the perfect fit.

Innovator: We are always open to helping students create a practice, organization, conversation, or process at Mount Vernon that might not already exist to serve their needs.

Ethical Decision Maker: The college process has many points that require brutal honesty and frank assessments of oneself. We strive in the college counseling department to have students display and develop integrity, honesty, empathy, respect, and fairness.

Collaborator: Strong partnerships define Mount Vernon, and the counseling department’s relationships with institutions of higher education allow us to bring them to campus so that students can begin directly forming their own relationships with the schools that are of interest to them.
