Trip Description and Purpose:

Moving Miami Forward

South Florida is emerging as a new international center for innovation and business. As the gateway to Latin America and a true global city, Miami is building on its diversity and connectivity to become a start-up hub too.

At the same time, South Florida itself is not very well connected internally: the city has some of the worst public transit and traffic of any American city. From sprawling suburbs invading nearby wetlands, limited train lines and outdated bus systems, traffic isn't getting better any time soon. This issue is an American issue -- and something that cities across the country are continuing to grapple with. What innovative ideas can we develop to address congestion and increase ease of transit across the city (and at home!).

Coming from Atlanta (another city with poor mobility) we have an interesting opportunity to immerse ourselves in the budding and diverse start-up community in South Florida while also working to develop our own ideas about improving mobility at home. Using the design process we will pull on the inspirations from our travel. We will spend our time in South Florida learning about how the city is supporting local innovators (and what innovators are doing themselves). We will conduct our own research on transport in the city and visit some of the new projects and startups working to improve mobility in Florida and nationwide. Along the way we will make time to enjoy the coast, have a Cuban sandwich, and connect with the diverse communities that make Miami such an appealing place to start a world-changing company.
